In today’s day in age with lay offs, cut backs, and restructuring of companies, many may find themselves in a bad position. Depending on where you live in the country, unemployment may be high and finding another job may not be easy. Some may do something completely different than they ever have before. They may look now in starting their own business.

There are many pros and cons to owning your own business. Here are a few of the perks:

• You are your own boss.
• You can do something potentially that you’re passionate about.
• You have a flexible schedule.
• You can make as much or as little money as you want. There is no cap on your salary.
• Depending on the type of business, you can often times work remotely. This means that you can still be doing business while on the golf course or on the beach.

Here are a few of the potentially negative points:

• You are your own boss, which means that it is all up to YOU. No one else to point the finger at.
• It is very hard work to start up a business from the ground floor. You will spend many hours each day in selling, marketing, and producing.
• Depending on the type of business, there may be a lot of competition out there. Do your homework.
• You must be a goal and task oriented. You can’t be lackadaisical. You must be intentional.

For my line of work, I have chosen custom screen printing, digital printing, and custom embroidery. I have been in this type of business for over twenty years now. I can tell you that it is a lot of work, but it is rewarding also. Not everyone is naturally an entrepreneur, but most everyone can learn. I am not good at everything concerning my business. That is why I surround myself with great people who can do the things with excellence that I can’t, for example, accounting. I hire an accountant to do my books, keeping me in line as it concerns the IRS.
